I was 10 weeks 2 days on Monday at my 2nd OB appointment and the little bean has grown 10 times its size since the last visit from .54 cm to 5.3 cm and looks more like a gummy bear now! The heart beat was 169 beats per minute and was awesome to hear again! The morning sickness is mostly gone and I'm feeling much more energetic! hooray!

The midwife at the appointment was awesome. She couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler, so she gave me an abdominal ultrasound! She was friendly and paid attention and this was a great change from the last "midwife" at my orientation. I plan on sticking with Walter Reed Bethesda through the entire pregnancy, so I'm glad that this experience was much better than my last visit. The midwife was great because she listened to me about my thyroid, showed me a little squishy model of what our baby looks like right about now, and was generally just nice and friendly and cool.
Brian and I have been working really hard on our registry since Jill is throwing me a shower in about 6 weeks! We know nothing about bottles or strollers or swings/bouncers or other baby related stuff other than what I remember from Kendra and Abby. I'm sure we'll figure it all out though. Mika is just being Mika. She saw a young groundhog today on our walk and pulled so hard that I had to let her go. I have been working with her a lot on loose-leash walking so that she doesn't pull that hard, but she lost control a bit. Hopefully she'll keep getting better or I will have to stop walking her eventually. We are also working on her stair etiquette because she frequently pushes up against me while I'm going down the stairs and we don't want any falls.
Today is my 30th birthday. I had to schedule my first ultrasound for today or wait an extra 11 days. 11 days would have been more torture for me than finding out I was miscarrying again. So I took the birthday ultrasound. I woke up that morning nervous. I had cramps. Thankfully I took the day off. Brian and I drove down to Walter Reed (Bethesda) and waited for the appointment. Then it was sweet sweet ultrasound time. And there it was. A small black circle with a little grey blob. And on the little grey blob was a little bitty flicker. And then, there was the "thump thump thump thump thump". 133 beats per minute. That was our little growing baby, just a little bean. At 0.54 centimeters, half the width of my pinky finger, and 133 beats per minute, we met our baby for the first time. thump thump thump thump thump thump

This picture is where you can see some more of the baby itself. The two cross hairs are measuring the crown-rump length (.54 centimeters) used for dating the pregnancy (more accurate than last menstrual period for me). 0.54 cm meant approx. 6 weeks 2 days. The top cross hair is the head with the face to the left. The faint bulge in the center of the embryo is the heart and maybe some arm buds. The bottom bulge on the left is the leg buds and tail. The faint blob to the right is most likely the yolk sack.
This picture (with the squiggle waves at the bottom of the picture) is where we got to see the heartbeat. The heartbeat was a strong and healthy 133 beats per minute, which is great as the tiny little bean measured .54 centimeters (half the width of my pinky) making me approximately 6 weeks 2 days along at that point. (Most heartbeats start around 6 weeks 0 days give or take).
